Physical Education and Games

T he aim of PE and Games at the Old Vicarage School is to develop confident individuals by allowing them to try new skills and to encourage girls of any skill level to develop their physical skills and fitness in both team and individual sports. Lessons are taught by specialist staff who teach physical education throughout the school.

Lower School

Girls in the Lower School have their PE and Games lessons at school, making good use of the well-equipped gym and playground, complete with a safety surface. Fundamental skills are the key focus, developing agility, balance and coordination and preparing the girls for the Lower School Sports Day, Upper School team and individual sports. Swimming lessons start from the first term in Reception and continue throughout each year.

Upper School

Upper School girls have PE, swimming, Early Morning Games and a Games Afternoon each week using our new sports grounds at King George’s Playing Fields in Ham. We also use the excellent facilities of Pools on the Park for swimming and Barnes Hockey Club for hockey.  All girls have the opportunity to represent their school each term for netball, hockey, cricket, swimming and athletics. All pupils participate in the annual Swimming Gala and School Sports Day, allowing the girls to show skill development and competitive spirit. We also hold inter-house matches in netball, hockey and cricket which encourage team work and fair play. Parents are most welcome at all fixtures, home and away. Matches are played against local schools with some teams and individuals competing at regional and national level. Girls also compete in tournaments including the IAPS swimming, netball, and cricket competitions.   Our teams have been very successful over the past few years in a number of tournaments with the following highlights in 2016- 2019:

Swimming IAPS Swimming National Finalists, ESSA Swimming Relay National Finalists, Richmond Borough Independent Girls and Borough Girls 3rd place, LSSA Swimming Finalists.
