From Jane Austin to Viking Invasions!

From the sublime dance floors of the 18th Century to the Viking raids on the northern monasteries, our Year 5 girls were transported through time for a series of exciting and interactive workshops.

Part of our celebrations for Jane Austen’s 250th Birthday, our Upper School girls enjoyed learning about Jane Austen’s life and discovering her most memorable characters. They were fascinated to learn that life was very different for women at the time and were particularly amused by Mrs Bennet in ‘Pride and Prejudice’ and her insistence that Mr Bingley marry one of her daughters! After learning about hobbies for women during the period, each year group was treated to a Regency dance workshop with ‘Mrs Bennet’ herself. They had a fabulous time, impressing us with their elegance, energy and style!

In stark contrast, they enjoyed a fascinating Viking workshop with Ash from ‘Marvellous History’. They formed a shield wall, handled weapons and examined a range of artefacts from the period. The girls rose to the challenge of being historians, trying to discover what the artefacts were and who might have used them by drawing on their prior knowledge. Ash was impressed with the girls’ thoughtful and lively questions, as well as their enthusiasm for History.
