Physical Education & Games

The aim of PE and Games at the Old Vicarage School is to develop confident and happy individuals by allowing them to try new skills and to encourage girls of any skill level to develop their physical skills and fitness in both team and individual sports. Lessons are taught by specialist staff who teach physical education and sport throughout the school.

Head of PE & Games, Clare Wood explains the school's unique approach;

“My philosophy for teaching sports and PE is ‘participation for all with confidence and excellence.’

Girls participating in PE and sports have a more positive experience in an all-girls environment, becoming confident in their movement and performance in both competitive and non-competitive situations.

Girls thrive, taking this positive experience into their teenage and adult lives.

Our aim is happy, successful, driven, and self-assured girls.”

Lower School

Fundamental skills are the key focus, developing agility, balance, coordination and preparing the girls for the Lower School Sports Day and Upper School team and individual sports. Lessons take place both in our well equipped gym and playground at School plus off site at our sports grounds at King George’s Playing Fields in Ham.

Weekly Swimming lessons for all girls start from the first term in Reception and continue throughout their time at the School.

Upper School

Upper School girls have PE, Swimming, Early Morning Games and a Games Afternoon each week using our sports grounds at King George’s Playing Fields in Ham. We also use the excellent facilities of Pools on the Park for swimming and Barnes Hockey Club for hockey.  All girls have the opportunity to represent their school in netball, football, hockey, cricket, and athletics.

Parents are most welcome at all fixtures, home and away. Matches are played against local schools with some teams and individuals competing at county and national level. Girls also compete in tournaments including the IAPS swimming, netball, and cricket competitions.
